Shield
Teal is the color traditionally associated with Branch Unassigned. The saltire suggests military determination. Black denotes power. The trench knives illustrate the 1918 Mark I knife, symbolizing the warrior spirit and close combat. The lightning bolts represent speed and the unit's electronic communications and warfare capabilities. The wadjet, an ancient Egyptian symbol of protection and used by the Egyptians to denote the five senses, denotes the advance sensory and intelligence gathering functions of the Battalion. The Aztec pyramid signifies the unit's engineering responsibilities, highlighting the Mexican and Central American heritage of the Engineer Company.
Crest
The crest is that of the California Army National Guard.
The coat of arms was originally approved for the Special Troops Battalion, 40th Infantry Brigade Combat Team on 21 August 2008. It was redesignated effective 1 September 2008, for the Special Troops Battalion, 79th Infantry Brigade Combat Team.
